Windows Update eats your internet while you play? Limit it without turning updates off
If your ping spikes now and then while nobody at home uses the internet, check whether Windows Update is downloading. Without a limit it can fill the whole line. The right fix is a limit, not turning Windows Update off, because then the PC stops getting security fixes.
Limit the download speed in Settings
- Open Settings, Windows Update, Advanced options.
- Pick Delivery Optimization, then Advanced options.
- Under Download settings pick Percentage of measured bandwidth.
- Tick Limit how much bandwidth is used for downloading updates in the background and slide it low, like 30%.
Updates download slower but you still get all of them. They finish by themselves while you are not playing.
Stop sharing updates with other PCs
On the same Delivery Optimization page turn off Allow downloads from other devices. The PC then downloads updates from Microsoft only and does not send update files to other PCs.
Playing seriously? Pause updates for a while
For a match or a planned session, go to Settings, Windows Update and press Pause updates. It stops them for up to a week. Afterwards press Resume updates so it carries on.
Updates installing make the PC slow too
While Windows installs updates it uses the CPU and the drive, not only the internet. If the PC feels slow right after starting, let the update finish first, or restart so it can complete, then play.
Let Savenz Optimizer set it
The Network page of Savenz Optimizer has Windows Update downloads use at most 30 % of the line: background downloads of Windows Update and the Store take at most 30 % of your internet speed. You still get every update, a backup is kept and Undo puts it back. Before you play on the FiveM page tells you whether Windows Update is busy right now before you start a game. Ping still jumping? See the guide on ping spikes when others use the internet, or ask in the Discord.
