Game freezes in a Discord screen share or an OBS recording? How to fix it
If friends see one frozen frame or a jumping picture when you share a game in Discord or record it with OBS, and it goes away in a window, the game most likely has Disable fullscreen optimizations ticked. It then runs in exclusive fullscreen, which keeps the screen to itself, so the capture program cannot grab it.
Untick it in both places
- Right click the game's .exe, pick Properties and go to the Compatibility tab.
- Untick Disable fullscreen optimizations.
- Press Change settings for all users. If it is ticked there, untick it too.
- Press OK and start the game again.
It has to go from both your user and all users. One case stayed frozen until it was gone from both.
Still frozen? Try Borderless
Set the game's Display Mode to Borderless or Windowed Borderless. On Windows 11 these frames go straight to the screen like fullscreen, and screen sharing still captures them.
In Discord, share the game window
When you press Share Your Screen, pick the game's window under Applications instead of the whole screen. If it stays black or frozen, turn off hardware acceleration in Discord's Settings, Advanced, and restart Discord.
Let Savenz Optimizer do it
The .EXE page of Savenz Optimizer shows which games have fullscreen optimizations off, for your user and for all users, and one button turns them back on everywhere. A backup is kept and Undo puts it back. Still frozen? Ask in the Discord.
