VALORANT VAN 9001 or VAN 9003: how to turn on TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot
On Windows 11 VALORANT needs the PC to boot in UEFI mode with Secure Boot on and TPM 2.0. Missing one gives VAN 9001 or VAN 9003. Both are BIOS switches. Most PCs sold in the last few years have them and just have them off.
Check in Windows first
- Press Win + R, type msinfo32 and press Enter. BIOS Mode must say UEFI and Secure Boot State must say On.
- Press Win + R, type tpm.msc and press Enter. It must say The TPM is ready for use, with Specification Version 2.0.
- If tpm.msc cannot find a TPM, it is not turned on in the BIOS yet.
Turn on TPM 2.0 in the BIOS
Enter the BIOS while the PC starts (mostly Delete or F2). On AMD look for fTPM or AMD CPU fTPM, on Intel for PTT or Intel Platform Trust Technology. Set it to Enabled, then Save and Exit.
Turn on Secure Boot
Secure Boot is usually under Boot or Security. Turn CSM off first (UEFI boot only), then set Secure Boot to Enabled. If the BIOS will not let you, look in the manual of that board.
If msinfo32 shows BIOS Mode as Legacy, Windows was installed the old way. With CSM off the PC will not boot. Windows has to be installed again in UEFI mode before Secure Boot can go on.
Other common VAN codes
- VAN 1067 or VAN 57: restart the PC first. If it stays, reinstall Vanguard.
- VAN 68 or VAN 81: the connection to Riot. Check the internet and turn off any VPN.
- vgc will not start: check that the vgc and vgk services are not set to Disabled. Some tuning programs and stripped Windows builds turn them off.
- VAN: RESTRICTION 5 is Memory integrity, which has its own guide.
Reinstall Vanguard
- Go to Settings, Apps and uninstall Riot Vanguard.
- Restart the PC.
- Open Riot Client. It installs Vanguard again.
- Restart once more. Vanguard starts with Windows.
Let Savenz Optimizer check it
The Fixes page of Savenz Optimizer has Something wrong: pick Valorant / Vanguard. It checks whether Vanguard is installed and on, whether vgk runs, whether the PC boots in UEFI mode and whether Secure Boot is on, then names what to fix. It only reads. Never been in a BIOS? Ask in the Discord.
