FiveM crashing? Every cause and how to fix it

Every FiveM crash shows a message. Look at the file name or code in it, then find the matching cause on this page. Every cause comes from the crash helper in Savenz Optimizer.

Updated 15 Oct 2026

Read the crash message first

When FiveM crashes it opens a window with a file name such as gta-net-five.dll or a code such as ERR_GFX_D3D_INIT. Copy that text. The cause that matches that name or code is the one to fix first.

Buttons and pages named here, such as the Fixes or Uninstaller page, are in Savenz Optimizer.

Fix it on your PC

FiveM could not load one of its own files

A file FiveM needs is missing or blocked (Windows error 126 or 127). An antivirus that removed it or a FiveM update that did not finish is the usual cause.

  1. Restart the PC and start FiveM again: an update that did not finish puts its files back then.
  2. If Windows Security or another antivirus removed a FiveM file (its protection history shows it), restore the file.
  3. Still the same: download FiveM from fivem.net and install it again.
  4. Verify GTA V's files.

An overlay crashed the game

A program that draws on top of games loaded its file into FiveM (named below), and that file crashed it.

  1. Turn off that program's in game overlay, or close it before you play.
  2. Recording FiveM: use OBS "Display Capture" instead of "Game Capture".

Security software hooked the game

An antivirus or sandbox loaded its own file into FiveM (named below), and that file crashed it.

  1. Update that security program and turn on its game mode.
  2. If it keeps happening, ask its support how to keep it out of FiveM. Microsoft Defender, which comes with Windows, works with FiveM.

Sound software crashed the game

Nahimic (sound effects that come with MSI, Dell, Alienware and other PCs) loads an overlay into games and is a well known cause of FiveM crashes.

  1. Uninstall Nahimic on the Uninstaller page and restart the PC. Your sound keeps working without it.

Problem with a sound device

The game's sound engine failed, usually because of the sound output Windows gave it.

  1. In Sound settings, set your headset or speakers as the default device.
  2. Disable outputs you don't use (monitor speakers, digital outputs, virtual cables).
  3. Turn off spatial sound (Windows Sonic, Dolby Atmos) for the device you play on.

The game ran out of memory

Windows could not give FiveM more memory. This happens when the paging file is off or too small (a common tweak), when the RAM is nearly full, or on very heavy servers.

  1. Turn the paging file back on ("System managed"), then restart the PC.
  2. Close Chrome and other heavy programs before you play.
  3. Lower Texture Quality and turn off Extended Texture Budget in FiveM's settings.

The NVIDIA driver crashed while building graphics

nvgpucomp64.dll is the part of the NVIDIA driver that builds shaders for the game. Crashes there come from an unstable CPU (Intel 13th and 14th gen most of all), an overclock or a damaged driver install.

  1. Intel 13th or 14th gen: update the motherboard BIOS (microcode 0x12F or newer) and keep Intel's default power settings.
  2. Undo CPU, GPU and RAM overclocks or undervolts (XMP / EXPO too) for a test.
  3. Install the graphics driver again (a clean install).
  4. Clear the graphics card's shader cache on the Cleaner page, then start FiveM again.

The graphics card or its driver stopped

FiveM lost the graphics card: the driver crashed or reset, the card was pushed too hard (overclock or undervolt), or it ran out of video memory.

  1. Undo any GPU overclock or undervolt (MSI Afterburner, Radeon tuning) and test at stock speeds.
  2. Update the graphics driver (a clean install).
  3. Turn off Hardware accelerated GPU scheduling (HAGS) on the GPU page, then restart the PC.
  4. Give the card more time before Windows resets it: Longer GPU timeout on the All graphics cards page.
  5. On cards with 4 GB of video memory or less, lower Texture Quality.
  6. Close programs that draw over games (RivaTuner, recording tools).
  7. Still crashing: check the card's temperature and that its power cables sit firmly.

GTA V's game files are damaged or changed

The game could not read one of its own data files.

  1. Verify GTA V's files in the launcher you bought it on (Steam: Library > GTA V > Properties > Installed Files > Verify).
  2. Remove single player mods from the GTA V folder: the mods folder, dinput8.dll, ScriptHookV.dll and .asi files.

Downloaded server files are broken

Files FiveM downloaded from the server (cars, maps, clothes) are damaged or could not be loaded.

  1. Clear the FiveM cache, then join again.
  2. If it happens on one server only, the server has a broken file: tell its staff.
  3. If it happens on many servers even after clearing, unstable RAM can damage downloads: test without XMP / EXPO.

FiveM's built in browser crashed

The part of FiveM that draws menus, the phone and the HUD (a built in Chrome) crashed.

  1. Clear the FiveM cache.
  2. Update the graphics driver.
  3. Close other programs that use a lot of memory or graphics power.

A secure connection failed

FiveM's secure connections fail when the PC's clock or time zone is wrong, or when another program inspects HTTPS traffic.

  1. Fix the clock: Fixes > "Turn time sync back on", and "Set up Thai" for the Bangkok time zone.
  2. Turn off HTTPS or web scanning in a third party antivirus, and close VPN or proxy programs.

FiveM couldn't reach its own servers

FiveM could not reach Cfx.re's services (sign in, server list, downloads).

  1. Check that the internet works in a browser.
  2. Try another DNS (Network page > DNS speed test) and close VPN or proxy programs.
  3. Allow FiveM in a third party firewall. Cfx.re's services can also be down for a while.

The connection to the server dropped

Your PC stopped hearing from the server. Packet loss, Wi Fi lag spikes or the server itself can cause it.

  1. Run the ping check on the Network page and look at loss and jitter.
  2. Use a cable instead of Wi Fi if you can, and restart the router.
  3. If other players dropped at the same time, the server had a problem.

FiveM's Rockstar sign in helper crashed

FiveM_ROSService signs you in to Rockstar while FiveM starts, and it crashed. ntdll.dll in the text is the Windows file it crashed in, not the cause.

  1. Turn the paging file on ("System managed") and restart the PC: with it off, this crash is common.
  2. Close FiveM, press Clear Rockstar sign in files (%LocalAppData%\DigitalEntitlements goes to the Recycle Bin, FiveM makes it again) and start FiveM.
  3. Set the clock right: Fix the clock.
  4. Open the Rockstar Games Launcher, sign in, and start GTA V story mode once.

FiveM's game ownership check crashed

legitimacy.dll is the part of FiveM that checks your Rockstar sign in and that you own GTA V. Its saved sign in files are the usual cause.

  1. Close FiveM, press Clear Rockstar sign in files (%LocalAppData%\DigitalEntitlements goes to the Recycle Bin, FiveM makes it again) and start FiveM.
  2. Open the Rockstar Games Launcher (and Steam or Epic if GTA V is from there), sign in, and start GTA V story mode once.
  3. Set the clock right: Fix the clock.
  4. Still crashing: verify GTA V's files.

The game crashed inside FiveM's game loop

gta-net-five.dll and net.dll are the parts of FiveM that run the game every frame, not your internet. The crash came from GTA V's own code in that loop, so the text alone names no single cause. Most often it is a broken download from the server (cars, maps, clothes) or an unstable PC.

  1. Clear the FiveM cache, then join again.
  2. Crashes near modded cars or on one server only: tell that server's staff the crash code. Its files or its game build (the b number in the crash text) can cause it.
  3. Verify GTA V's files.
  4. Turn off overlays and recording tools.
  5. Undo CPU and RAM overclocks (XMP / EXPO) for a test, and update the motherboard BIOS and chipset driver: players fixed this crash that way.

The drive is full

FiveM needs free space for its cache and the files servers send.

  1. Free some space on the drive with FiveM and GTA V (Cleaner, Uninstaller). Keep at least 20 GB free.

FiveM stopped itself while starting (early exit trap)

FiveM's protection closed the game early. Steam's beta version is a common cause: FiveM loads its overlay even when GTA V is not from Steam. Cheat tools and programs that inject into games set it off too.

  1. In Steam: Settings > Interface > Client Beta Participation, choose No beta chosen, then restart Steam.
  2. GTA V not from Steam: exit Steam fully (Steam > Exit) before starting FiveM.
  3. Close trainers, cheat tools and programs that inject into games, and turn off overlays.
  4. Clear the FiveM cache and start FiveM again.

The crash is inside GTA V's own code

GTA5_b3258.exe is the game itself (b3258 is the game version the server runs). The text names no single cause: most often a broken download from the server, ReShade or single player mods, or an unstable PC.

  1. Clear the FiveM cache, then join again.
  2. Move ReShade out of FiveM's plugins folder and single player mods out of the GTA V folder for a test.
  3. Crashes on one server only: tell its staff the crash text.
  4. Verify GTA V's files.
  5. Undo CPU and RAM overclocks (XMP / EXPO) for a test.

The crash window names no part of FiveM

The stack trace shows only addresses: FiveM crashed before it could name the part that failed, often while starting. The text cannot point to a cause, so fix the warnings this page found on this PC first.

  1. Fix the warnings under this PC's checks on this page first (paging file, hardware errors, overlays).
  2. Turn the paging file on ("System managed") if it is off, then restart the PC.
  3. Close FiveM, press Clear Rockstar sign in files and start FiveM again: crashes while starting often come from FiveM's Rockstar sign in.
  4. Turn off overlays and recording tools, and undo CPU, GPU or RAM overclocks (XMP / EXPO) for a test.
  5. Still crashing: press Send to Savenz on this page.

Not your PC (the server or your account)

The server hit one of the game's limitsNot your PC

The server spawns more of something (vehicles, props, peds) than the game allows at once. This is a server problem, not your PC.

  1. Tell the server's staff the error and the pool name in it. They can raise the limit in the server's settings.
  2. Rejoin later or try another server.

A server script crashed the gameNot your PC

The crash came from the server's own scripts (Lua or JavaScript), not from your PC.

  1. Tell the server's staff the crash code shown above.
  2. Clear the FiveM cache once. If it keeps happening on that server only, it is theirs to fix.

The server blocks changed game filesNot your PC

This server only allows a clean game. Mods, ReShade or other added files were found.

  1. Remove mods from the GTA V folder (the mods folder, .asi files, dinput8.dll).
  2. Remove ReShade and other files from FiveM's plugins folder, then start FiveM again.

The server needs Steam or Discord openNot your PC

The server identifies players by their Steam or Discord account, and FiveM could not get it.

  1. Start Steam and / or Discord and sign in before you open FiveM, then join again.

You are bannedNot your PC

The server or Cfx.re blocked your account. The message says who did it and why.

  1. Read the reason and the ban ID in the message.
  2. A server ban: ask that server's staff. A Cfx.re ban: only Cfx.re can review it.

The server removed youNot your PC

The server kicked you. The reason is in the message.

  1. Read the reason in the message and ask the server's staff if it is unclear.

Rockstar refused the sign in (1.000.x)Not your PC

Rockstar's sign in server turned the sign in down. The PC is usually fine: the account or the internet connection it came from was refused for now.

  1. Sign in on rockstargames.com in a browser with the same account. If the site asks for a code, a new password or says the account is locked, finish that there first.
  2. Try once over another internet connection (a phone hotspot). If it signs in there, Rockstar is refusing your home connection for now: try again later, or switch back after signing in.
  3. After many failed tries Rockstar blocks sign in for a while: wait a few hours before trying again.
  4. Run the Rockstar check: the clock, a VPN or a proxy can also cause it.

Rockstar sign in or game check failedNot your PC

FiveM checks that you own GTA V through your Rockstar account, and that check failed.

  1. Open the Rockstar Games Launcher (and Steam or Epic if GTA V is from there), sign in, and start GTA V story mode once.
  2. Keep the launcher up to date and the PC's clock correct.
  3. Still crashing (FiveM_ROSService): close FiveM, press Clear Rockstar sign in files (%LocalAppData%\DigitalEntitlements goes to the Recycle Bin, FiveM makes it again) and start FiveM.

Not sure which one it is

The text does not point to one clear cause. These steps fix most FiveM crashes. Try them in this order:

  1. Clear the FiveM cache.
  2. Update the graphics driver.
  3. Turn off overlays (Discord, Steam, NVIDIA, RivaTuner) and recording tools.
  4. Make sure the paging file is on.
  5. Undo CPU, GPU or RAM overclocks (XMP / EXPO) if you use them.
  6. Verify GTA V's files.
  7. Still crashing: send the crash code and the "Copy report" text to the server's staff or the Cfx.re forum.
