FiveM black screen or stuck loading? How to fix it
A black screen or a loading screen that never ends has more than one cause. Most of the time it is a broken download from the server, too little space, or a PC that is not set up right. Go in this order: the first steps are the quickest.
Fix in this order
- Clear the FiveM cache and join again. Files downloaded from the server (cars, maps, clothes) can get damaged. If it only hangs on one server, that server may have a broken file: tell its staff.
- Check the free space on the drive with FiveM and GTA V. Keep at least 20 GB free, because FiveM keeps its cache and the files servers send there.
- The paging file must be on. If a tweak turned it off, set it back to System managed and restart the PC. With it off, FiveM often fails while starting.
- Remove single player mods from the GTA V folder: the mods folder, dinput8.dll, ScriptHookV.dll and .asi files, and ReShade in FiveM's plugins folder. Some servers refuse you when they find these.
- If the screen goes black for a moment and comes back, the graphics driver stopped responding and Windows reset it. Do a clean install of the driver, and undo any GPU overclock or undervolt before you test again.
- Servers that need Steam or Discord: start and sign in to them before you open FiveM, or the server cannot identify you.
- Turn off the in game overlays of Discord, Steam, NVIDIA and RivaTuner. If the menus, phone or HUD don't show up, clear the cache and update the graphics driver.
Still stuck?
- Verify GTA V's files in the launcher you bought it on. On Steam: Library, right click GTA V, Properties, Installed Files, Verify.
- If a crash window shows up, bring its text to the Discord. It finds the cause faster than guessing.
Let Savenz Optimizer help
The FiveM page of Savenz Optimizer clears FiveM's cache and checks the PC, for example mods left in the GTA V folder and how often the graphics driver stopped responding this week. If the game crashes, paste the crash text and it tells you the cause and the fix.
