FiveM high ping, lag or warping? Find where it slows down

High ping and lag have many causes, so first find where it slows down. This page uses the same method as the Network page of Savenz Optimizer.

Updated 15 Oct 2026

1. Wi Fi or a cable

If the PC has a LAN port but you play on Wi Fi, plug in a cable. The ping gets steadier and there is less lag and warping in FiveM. Wi Fi can make the ping jump now and then even when the average looks low.

2. Check each part of the route

Ping the router at home, the internet outside and the server you play on, then see which part is slow.

  • Slow already at the router: it is at home, such as the Wi Fi signal, the cable or the router.
  • The router is steady but the internet is slow: your internet provider or the route may be the cause.
  • Only one server is slow: that server or the route to it.

Look at jitter (how much the ping swings), not only the average. Swings are what make you warp.

3. Ping spikes when someone downloads (bufferbloat)

Some homes have a fine ping until someone downloads a game, watches videos or uploads a clip, then the ping shoots up. This is bufferbloat. You measure it by how much the ping rises while the line is full, on download and on upload, and grade it from A+ to F.

  • Turn on SQM or QoS in the router.
  • Pause downloads such as Steam or Windows Update while you play.
  • Give background programs an upload limit.

4. Dropping out of the server

Messages like connection timed out or lost connection mean your PC stopped hearing from the server. Packet loss, Wi Fi spikes or the server itself can cause it. If other players dropped at the same time, it was the server.

5. FiveM can't reach its own servers

If the server list, sign in or downloads don't load, check the internet in a browser, try another DNS and close VPN or proxy programs. Cfx.re's services can also be down for a while.

DNS helps with finding servers and signing in. It does not lower your ping in game.

6. The PC's clock is wrong

With a wrong clock or time zone, FiveM's secure connections fail (certificate, SSL, TLS errors). Turn time sync back on and set your time zone.
